Disease

revised 29/01/2023.

Is disease real or imagined? It certainly is real to the human senses. To those who live under the law of mortal mind and deny God their only recourse is to medical science. Disease and death are an inevitable part of the human existence since the Garden of Eden. They occur randomly in our earthly life until our soul attains that level of understanding of God which Christ Jesus demonstrated. Then, like Jesus, we will have no need of our body. However, we can pray to God to intervene in our lives so as to give us more time on this earth to understand Him. But this does not mean that you will live forever, nor that disease will not reoccur. After all, the peoples that Jesus raised from the dead are not with us today. We are not talking about praying to heal a cut on your finger or to find your lost keys here. Through sincere prayer we can grow our spiritual understanding and hence improve our human condition also. Thus, enabling us to continue seeking to understand God while we can in this life.

While disease is real to mortal man it cannot affect the spiritual man because disease does not exist in God's realm where only pure and perfect divine Thought exists. God is not a corporeal being He is divine Thought. The spiritual man (our soul) is the idea or child of God. It has no physical body which can be diseased, it is just a reflection of God's divine thoughts. Spiritual man lives by the ‘power of faith 'and is not ‘under the curse' of mortal law (Gal. 3). What is this ‘power of faith’ which sustains the spiritual man and denies the laws of mortal mind?

“Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (I Cor. 2:5).

Your faith should be in the power of God and not in mortal mind or human ego. Dependence on the wisdom of men has left us at the mercy of disease. This happened when Adam chose to know both good and evil. In so doing mankind lost God's protection and was vulnerable to the random laws of nature which include disease. Medical science would try to cure disease by this same wisdom. (“for he is a liar and the father of it”: John 8:44). Indeed, there have been many recent breakthroughs in medical science such as induced pluripotency stem cell therapy which suggests that it is possible to reprogram stem cells and reintroduce them back into the body to replace diseased or worn-out cells. In the future this may remove the need for the transplant of organs for example. While these medical remedies will improve the quality of our human life, they do not address our spiritual life.

Prayer can also cure disease but more importantly prayer develops our understanding of God which is our reason for being here. The idea that we are the spiritual children of God is God's pluripotency stem cell. Divine Mind transmits this idea, this stem cell of perfection and love, which reprograms the soul and thence the human brain that has allowed the disease to flourish.

Jesus demonstrated that faith in the power of divine Mind can bring about these cures. But much more importantly it can rejuvenate the soul. The most important thing for a healing to take place is faith in the power of God. The only 'belief' that we must deny is that mortal mind is more powerful than divine Mind. This will lead to the only lasting cure for the soul and thereby the body. "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 27:3).

Disease, and in particular, the fear of it, is a conspiracy of mortal mind by which mortal mind seeks to keep us under its control by stopping us from believing in the power of God. It is a consequence arising from mankind (mortal mind) claiming to be a creator in its own right and that it is as powerful as God. While we subscribe to this belief, we will be dependent on the random laws of mortal mind, sin, disease and death. Our mortal lives and our body will continue to be in chaos without seeming rhyme nor reason; sometimes healthy and sometimes not. Chaos is the very nature of the physical world while harmony reigns in the spiritual realm. “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is peace” (Rom. 8: 6).

The allegory of the Garden of Eden in Genesis portrays a moment in time when man reached that stage in his physical development when he thought that he could put his faith in the evolution of mortal man instead of God. Mankind became dependent only on matter. From then on the development of the spiritual man became of secondary or of no importance to mankind. In the Biblical account, mortal mind tempted man by offering him the opportunity to become as knowledgeable and as powerful as God. Of course, in reality, mortal mind had no capacity or authority to make this offer. It was a lie, an ‘imagining’ (see below) on mortal mind's part aimed at getting man to deny the only true and all-powerful God.

Mankind was beguiled by the idea that it could become godlike. Hence the proliferation of many mortal minds, many man-made gods, and many conflicting and erroneous points of view: “though there be gods many and lords many in this world ….. but to us there is only one true God” (I Cor. 8: 5). This multiplicity of minds gives rise to the proliferation of disease, confusion, and lack of harmony that we see in the world today. Mankind, governed by mortal mind, has sought out many inventions, some of which seem beneficial but many of which are not. This is part of the subtilty of mortal mind. It keeps us under its spell by offering moments of happiness and pleasure. We only worry about our true relationship to God when things go wrong. The key to eternal happiness, health and pleasure is found only by serving and knowing the one true God.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal; but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (II Cor.10:5).

The power that mortal mind claims to have over us as God's child must be denied. we can cast sdown mortal mind from the pedestal that we have put it on. Mortal mind 'imagines' that it is more powerful than God. We can only overcome this claim of mortal mind by the ‘strong holds’ or the power of God. All man made (carnal) remedies are of temporary use in this fight. Mankind has chosen to believe that its mind is the only intelligence and that divine Mind, or God, does not exist or at best is of no real consequence. Disease is the consequence of mortal mind governing the body. Mortal mind 'exalteth itself against the knowledge of God’. Mortal mind tries to block out the knowledge of God from our consciousness: to obscure our soul from reflecting God. The belief in the power of mortal mind, and its consequential disease, can be ‘cast down’ like the false idol that it is by the power of Truth.

God knows nothing of sin, disease and death. "This then is the message we have heard of him, and declare unto you, God is light and in him is no darkness at all" (I John 1:5).

Disease can be cast down with its procreator, mortal mind. This is what is meant by the saying that ‘disease is not real’ because it can't affect our eternal life which is our real life and our reason for being. It is not real to God. We do not have to be susceptible to it. It is not part of His creation. Disease can't be sustained in the face of the power of the Truth. This Truth can be ‘pulled down’ over us, like a comforting protective blanket, to restore soul and thereby the body to its natural harmony. When all our thoughts are brought into obedience with Christ's teachings, we will have that 'mind in us which was also in Christ Jesus’. The physical body will also be brought into perfect harmony; it will be "fitly joined together". We will have deprived mortal mind of its powers over us.

Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” (Eph. 5:14). Awake from the hypnotic dream of mortal mind that it is more powerful than God. Rise up from those who are dead to the Christ Truth living only in the material world; sweep away the cobwebs from your eyes and let the light of Truth govern your lives.

From a spiritual viewpoint it is not essential that you know the exact form the disease takes as the initial approach to dealing with it is the same. From time-to-time disease takes different forms depending on what the common thought of mankind is at the time. Mortal mind is certainly becoming more subtle in its attempts to exert its control over us as mankind finds new temporary solutions to the more common forms of disease. I say temporary because the disease is not the cause but the effect. Medical science, by curing the present effect, merely forces mortal mind to look for another disease or human failing to hold us to ransom. It is the spiritual cause which must be addressed before a physical healing will be revealed.

God is only concerned with the spiritual nurturing and development of His children, His ideas. As we come to understand more about God and our spiritual existence all our physical and emotional needs will be met including the correct functioning of our physical body. Our soul will be redeemed or restored to the spiritual perfection it had before it was corrupted by a beguiling mortal mind. (II Cor. 11:3) Our body also will be restored to the perfection which was lost when we started to believe in the 'Adam dream' instead of God. This is the promise of redemption that Jesus made.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matt. 6:33).

The only thing we have to do to gain eternal life is to seek to understand God. If we are genuinely seeking the truth through prayer God will intervene in our lives to facilitate our spiritual progression. The healing of a disease is the effect of this spiritualization of our thoughts. It is the 'sign following' (Mark 16:20) of our improved understanding of God. When we earnestly pray to the truth, to understand God, He will intervene in our lives and override the laws of nature. This seeking is the justification of our existence in this life and in the hereafter. Christ's mission on this earth was to reveal this truth to us, that we might know God. When we achieve this knowledge and spiritual perfection all will be well. We should be ever grateful for the love that God hath bestowed on us. The importance of the healing is that it encourages us to learn more about God and secondly it gives you more time on this earth to continue to that seeking. The healing is a demonstration that we have an improved understanding of God. When we understand God completely then like Jesus, we will have no need of our physical bodies. If we do not reach that exalted state before the death of our bodies, then we must continue this seeking in the afterlife.

Disease, sin and all the discords in our lives are the result of putting our faith in matter and mortal mind rather than in God. They are the consequences of mankind placing its ego above that of the divine Ego. We can choose which system we live under either the harsh laws of matter or the grace and truth of Christ. The physical body will obey whichever mind is in control of it, whether it be mortal mind or divine Mind. Destroy the belief in the power of mortal mind and replace it with the Love of God and harmony will reign.
