Jesus's ascension and resurrection demonstrated that his real being as a child of God was spiritual because he could come and go from his physical body. John the Elder, who was a contemporary of Jesus, confirms the spiritual existence of the child of God in 1 John 3: 1 -3.
"Behold, what manner of love the father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore, the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. and every man that hath this hope in him is purified, even as he is pure."
"Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed on us": John is overcome with amazement at the gift of Love that God has bestowed on us: "that we should be called the sons of God". That he should make us his children.
" therefore, the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not": The world does not know of the existence of the spiritual child of Giod. It is only aware of the physical man Jesus. It does not see or understand the existence of the spiritual realm. Therefore, the world doesn't recognize that we too are the spiritual children of God. Our spiritual being or soul can't be seen or described by the physical senses.
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God": We are right now the spiritual children of God whether we recognize it or not: we have been and always will be God's child.
"And it doth not yet appear what we shall be ": The significance of being the child of God is not clear to humanity because it only looks at things from a material perspective.
"but we know that when he shall appear"; As Christians when we recognize and understand the truth about the existence of our spiritual being revealed to us by Jesus:
"we shall be like him"; We shall see that we too are perfect images and Liknesses of God's thought. We shall see that we too are perfect images and Liknesses of God's thought.
"for we shall see him as he is": We shall understand the true nature of the Christ and our spiritual birthright as the children of God.
"and, every man that hath this hope in him is purified": Everyone that hopes in the Lord and prays to achieve an understanding of God is made perfect and made free of the constraints of matter:
"even as he is pure": We shall be pure in spirit like him; we shall have that mind which was also in him.
The process of purification through pray is the removal of all ungodlike thoughts and the replacement of the human ego with the Divine.
